Karlo Estates was the first winery to be certified vegan and started making wine in 2008. Not only are their wines vegan certified – including the packaging (so you don’t have to believe them), but all of their food offerings are always vegan. Even the two principals, Sherry Karlo and Saxe Brickenden are vegan, so, Karlo is as vegan as it gets.

“Our objective is always to let the character of the vintage and the vineyard shine through in our wines. To that end, we take a very minimal interventionist approach to winemaking. We also benefit greatly from our gravity process, in which very little extraction of harsh flavours occurs, reducing the need to fine. However, when we do require fining, we choose plant- or earth-based fining agents such a pea protein, potato protein and bentonite clay. DOMANINE QUEYLUS

At Domanine Queylus we believe in sustainable viticulture. The vines are grown organically (uncertified) out of respect for the precious, fragile soils of the Niagara Bench. No synthetic herbicides or insecticides are used. Each vineyard is cared for by hand, including pruning; shoot-thinning; shoot positioning; leaf pulling; green harvesting; and not forgetting the hand-harvesting of the entire crop. All of our wines are 100% vegan; no animal products are used at any point during production.

Lacey Estates Winery is a family owned and operated vineyard and winery. First planting was in 2003 all by hand and continues this practice to ensure quality of the vines. Our winemaker Kimball Lacey believes in low intervention minimalist wines using no animal products for fining or filtering. We produce small-batch wines with complexity and character.

Southbrook organic vineyards

“At Southbrook we strive to make wines with the least negative impact on the land, while encouraging and implementing regenerative practices. This includes the use of solar power, the cleansing of water before release it back into the water system, and the regeneration of soils thru the use of non-chemical fertilizers. We do not use any animal byproducts in the winemaking process choosing instead to use bentonite clay as a fining agent.”

Bachelder Niagara

“We are minimalists from the get-go… we want the signature of our wines to be the terroir from whence they come, and not any human intervention! We press both Chardonnay, Gamays, and Pinot Noirs very lightly, we ferment with indigenous yeasts, and practice long élévages (18-22 months) in mostly-neutral French oak 228 litre barrels, so that the young, more simple primary varietal fruit abates into something more expressive, more textured, more refined, with more terroir or ‘sense of place. We don’t rack, we don’t pump, we don’t stir the barrels, we rarely fine, and never with any animal products! A light filtration and then to bottle for 6 months bottle-bouquet ageing prior to release!”
